MENTOPLASTY

WHAT IS IT?

Mentoplasty or chin surgery is a surgical intervention that is performed in different cases where you want to change the position of the chin to achieve:

  • Move the chin forward.

  • Move the chin backwards.

  • Change the position from side to side, which can help with asymmetric chins.

  • Vertical changes, such as lengthening or shortening the chin.

What is achieved in all cases is to harmonize the facial oval or balance the relationships with the nose, cheekbones and neck.

Given the importance that the chin has in the appearance of the face, its analysis is essential. In the first consultation we carefully analyze the bone structures, skin and soft parts, with special emphasis on the alterations that occur and are responsible for the lack of balance in the face.

It may be necessary to request some imaging test, such as X-ray or CT scan, in order to advise us about the relationship between the bone and soft parts in order to plan the intervention and the best way to achieve the desired appearance. Not all mentoplasties are the same, it depends on what is sought to achieve and the initial state. To increase volume, one can opt for filling with substances such as hyaluronic acid, biopolymers or lipo-sculpture with one's own fat, intended for milder cases.

This minimally invasive surgery is very versatile and offers aesthetic results on the lower third of the face and profile, in a definitive way.

CANDIDATE PATIENTS

BENEFITS OF LA
MENTOPLASTY

It is a minimally invasive and ambulatory surgery that allows to balance and harmonizing the face and does not require much recovery time.

In general, among the main benefits of laser chin surgery, we highlight the fact that it allows for defining or increasing the chin; bringing it to the desired position that allows for facial contouring of the lower third and correcting facial asymmetries.

SIZE

The size and shape of the chin are not as desired and the patient wants to improve their appearance.

MALOCCLUSION
DENTAL

He has a dental malocclusion, which can be redirected with an intervention on the chin.

DEFINITION

There is a lack of definition in the angle between the chin and the neck.

HARMONY

Cases in which mentoplasty is proposed for the planning of other types of interventions and to achieve a more harmonious appearance. This is the case of a rhinoplasty, a facelift or a neck liposuction.

WHO ARE CANDIDATES?

  • Generally, patients with short chins or short jaws are the ones who most come to perform this surgery.

  • Patients with a profile in disharmony due to presenting a very pronounced chin forward.

  • Disharmony of the facial profile due to a receding or backward chin, which produces a convex profile and pseudo-jowls

  •  In patients who undergo orthognathic surgery to achieve greater facial balance after repositioning the jaw and maxilla bones.

  • Patients with  developmental abnormalities of the jaw bones, such as asymmetries  or congenital agenesis of the jaw, a condition in which the patient is born without a part of the jaw.

  • Patients who desire harmonization of facial features, when the chin or jaw is too large or small for the patient's face.

  • As part of the gender reassignment process. Being able to achieve female or male jaws.

HOW IT IS PERFORMED?

Through local anesthesia, or local anesthesia and sedation, a small intraoral incision is made with laser technology (inside the mouth) in the chin area, through which the chin bone is approached, a cut is made in the mandibular bone, which allows for the necessary movements to harmonize the patient's face. Bringing the bone in the desired direction and position. Once the desired position is achieved, the bone is fixed in its new position.

OTHER CHIN TREATMENT OPTIONS.

1.    Chin augmentation with hyaluronic acid: It is a non-surgical aesthetic treatment that aims to increase the volume of the chin by injecting hyaluronic acid, a safe and reabsorbable filler. It has a recovery time of a few days. The only disadvantage of this method is that it is not permanent, so its effects disappear after approximately 1 year.

2.    Chin augmentation with implants: A silicone or other material implant of small dimensions, whose texture and hardness resemble bone, is implanted, thus preventing a noticeable difference between a natural chin and one improved by an implant. The approach can be intraoral or under the chin. This procedure does not require hospitalization, it is ambulatory. The recovery is fast, simple and does not leave scars.

3.    Chin augmentation with fat: First, the fat that will be transferred to the face is extracted. This fat can be from the abdomen, flanks or from the lower third of the face and cervical region. Once the fat is extracted, a purification process is performed to obtain high-quality fat cells. Then, the fat is injected into the facial area that needs to recover volume and increase the chin. Chin augmentation with fat is considered a low-risk surgery. It can be done when the volume is small and the desired final result does not exceed 0.4-0.5 cm. This procedure is not recommended if the person wants a firm chin and a significant change in volume.
